CHAPTER 20

"How'd it go with your folks last night?" Dougie fell in step with me.
"Way better than I had expected." I declared as we made a turn towards the lockers.
"Really? How long?"
"Two weeks." I beamed up at him and met his grimace.
"Does that mean I can't spend time with you?" He said in a cute, small voice.
"Nope. You can kidnap me any time you want."
"Great. This afternoon. Four-thirty. Cafe. Pick you up at the parking lot." He gave me a playful wink and headed to the direction of his mates. I shook my head and smiled.

And then I was all alone. This time of day, I would probably be over at Max's locker talking to her about Dougie's family. Not now, though. We're no longer friends.

I stuffed my books in my bag and slammed my locker shut. Where could I possibly go? I asked myself. I turned to my left and found the library entrance. I decided to go there to skim through my notes before class.

I pushed open the door and walked in. At one table, far back, students from the year before us were huddled in a group talking loudly with each other. In one corner, a guy and girl sat side by side, both equally engrossed with what they were reading. Talk about stating the obvious. I knew, and I bet everyone else did, they were involved with each other but used the library as a cover up.

I rolled my eyes and turned away from them. When I did, I was staring right at my mortal enemy. Max Welsch. I glared at her then strolled to a table at the opposite side of the room.

I have enough in my hands and Max will not get to me. She was just pestering me.

I took a deep breath and pulled out my books. I spread them out in front of me and started with the thick literature one for English class.

"Bella? Can I talk to you?" Max's voice came from behind me. I ignored her and pretended to read.
"Bella?" She repeated. "Cut it out, Bella!" She swatted my book away in annoyance causing me to jump to my feet in defense.
"Why are you acting like this? You never were immature!" She demanded.
"Shut up you liar!" I screamed at her face.

*That was a tad bit short. *shrug* Oh well. I'll just make up next time. It gets better from here.

CHAPTER 21
"What?" Max looked grim and mortified.
"You heard me. Shut the fu*ck up!" I gathered my books off the table and added, "You are so pathetic. Make up as many stories as you like. I don't fu*cking care!" I stormed out of the library.

People - even the librarian - were frozen by the intensity of my words. I didn't care. She deserved everythg back there.

I paced back and forth on the pavement near the parking lot. Even at the end of the day, my body was in fighting mode. I had so much energy to despense.

"Woah. Keep walking and the pavement will melt away under you." Dougie came up behind me and guided me to his car.
"Bad day today?" He opened the passenger door for me and got in the driver's seat.
"I'm sorry. Yeah. Had an encounter with Max today."
"Is it that same stuff when you came to me that night?" He asked curiously.
"I guess." I said.
"What is it about, exactly?"
"Not now please. I feel like hitting something." I diverted the conversation. I didn't want him to know we were fighting over him.
"Okay. Well then I hope I can cheer you up." He started backing away from the parking lot and headed to the opposite direction of our houses.

Dougie pulled over in front of a bowling alley. I found it funny we were there.

"A bowling alley? Seriously, Doug." I said with a light chuckle.
"I said cafe. Not bowling alley. I suck at bowling." He took my hand a led me to the entrance.
"Then why are we here?" I asked.

He pushed the door open to the bowling alley. Middle-aged men crowded the place and it made ma laugh more.
"Okay. Let's go to the cafe." I turned towards the snackbar."
"That's a snackbar." He said; as if it weren't that obvious. "The cafe's over there." He pointed to a room suspended on the upper part of the building.
"Oooh. Cool." I gasped as we went up the stairs.
"Who's laughing now?" He said.

We ordered up some latte and chatted. The alley looked so much better from there. It was fun looking at the people down below.

I had finally put to rest my anger with Max. I felt much better and my extra energy was gone. All that mattered was I had fun with Dougie. And besides, I have to get home before my parents know I broke house rules even when I was grounded.

Before everything could get better though...she just had to ruin the moment.

"Dougie!!!" She screeched.

Standing in the middle of the doorway, evil smile in place and her perfection in full show, stood Angela. It's been a while.

"Missed me?" She threw herself at him.
"Why are you here, Angela?" Dougie said in a nervous tone.
"Daddy got me on a flight earlier. Isn't that great?"
"Yeah." He said. "How was Paris?" He added.
"It was great. I missed you though." She said in a cooing tone.

It suddenly hit me. Angela in Paris. No wonder I haven't heard anything about her. Why was Dougie so nervous?

Objective of the game. Try to make the most out of what you have.

His voice echoed in my mind. A lump formed in my throat and my eyes began to water as I looked at them.

I couldn't take it anymore. I slid out of my seat and ran. Away from Dougie. Away from them.
