CHAPTER 10

Word spread through school about me and Dougie. Everything would've been fine...........except nobody would believe it. Dougie and I didn't speak of our relationship which made it more doubtful. We also agreed to put some distance between us, just until the suspicion goes down.

What we agreed on put me in deeper waters. Girls from different batches started picking fights with me.

In a bathroom stall, the following words were written:

Come Friday, I was fed up with everything going on at school. Everyone was rude and mean and it was getting to me. I was always frustrated and I missed Dougie terribly.

I lazily pulled on my school uniform. Not in the mood for fussing over my hair, I gathered it in a messy ponytail. I grabbed my bag and went downstairs to head out.

"Good morning!" My mum greeted happily.
"Yeah. Hi." I said; short of enthusiasm. I passed by the kitchen door but didn't go in.
"Wait up." Mum walked to me. "Anything wrong?"
I hesitated for a moment before bowing my head. "No. I'm just tired."

"Hey, Aribella." The cheerleaders called in a mocking tone. "How's the imaginary relationship going?"
I was about to scream my reply just when a pair of hands grabbed my shoulders and spun me away from them.
"Calm down. Stay clear from trouble, Bella." Max said; not removing her hands from my shoulders.
I sighed; frustrated. "Have you seen Dougie?"
"Not yet. Anything you want me to tell him?"
"No." I sighed again; this time, because of sadness.

At the very start, Max was so jealous of me and Dougie. Now look who has to stay away from each other.

"Why is it going this way?" I muttered.
"It'll get better." Max replied.
"I wish."

At lunch, Dougie sat with us for the first time in a long time. I was ecstatic, but I had to hold down the huge smile that threatened to make an appearance on my face.
"How's it going?" Dougie asked.
"Bad. They're calling me names-"
"Hey, Dougie." Angela, on of the cheerleaders stepped towards our table. "Why are you hanging out with that skank of a loser? You know fully well she's just using you for street cred."
I looked at Dougie from the corner of my eye and saw that he didn't move even the slightest bit. He just stared blankly at her.
"Excuse me. We're trying to have lunch, thank you." Max said in a loud voice.
"And there's sidekick skank." They eyed her disgustedly. "What do you have in this?"
"You're talking about my mate. I have everything to do with this."
"We weren't talking to you anyway so shutt it."

My blood began to boil at this point. I saw that Max was about to reply, but I couldn't stand another second of it.

"Shut up! Angela, get your arse away from here! We don't want you around!" I slammed my fists on the table and stood up. "I just lost my appetite." I told Max before heading to the door.

"Bella! Wait!" Max was traiing behind me as I furiously pushed my way to the exit.
"I'm going home." I grumbled angrily.
"What? Come on. You can't let them get to you."
"Did you not see? He didn't say anything!"
"What?" A male voice said from behind us. I froze in my tracks; realizing it was Dougie.
"You didn't defend me." I said softly before turning around to face him. "You heard what she had to say and you didn't even utter a single word!"
"What? I thought we were both okay with keeping it a secret?!"
"Not when people start to verbally abuse me!" I stepped towards him. "You know what? I don't even want to talk about what just happened in there." I shook my head and turned back to the door. "I'm going home."
